Newbie question

OK, I purchased the 20 sign template. I'm able to put it over a piece of wood but question is how do I get it to cut out the design around the edges? All I get is a little "guide" around the edge that has to be trimmed with the band saw. Please help!

Can I guess you guys usually trim the signs out with another piece of equipment? I'm a wood shop teacher and my students are wondering how to trace the edge and place tabs and set the unit up for cut-out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
