I use the control-print screen method and paste the image into photo shop crop and then save as an image file
Then have a design image to send to my customer
I'm a fan of the SnagIt program. Not free but well worth its cost for taking screen captures and making most any format picture (with or without annotation.) It has proven to be my go-to program for years now capturing images from CarveWright Designer.

I used to use the print screen method, but have recently started using the snipping tool that comes with Windows 7. It's a lot easier.

Please take a look at Greenshot. It is an opensource program (free). It is probably slightly less functional that snagit currently, but definitely way more functional than the built in snipping tool.

The "Snipping Tool" comes with Windows 7. Takes a snapshot of the area you want on your screen and save it as png.
I use Screen Hunter 6, has a lot of options and runs 64bit. I either paste a picture directly in an email, maybe on my letterhead, or for tutorials I collect the pictures in a file and put them in an MSPub document that I print to PDF.
