Default Trying to master a curve

I am using macromedia fireworks and tring to import a jpeg in to CW, for a curve but it seems impossible to set the increments in the gray scale jsut right to get a smooth shape could someone help me with this. I have the image I used and what the carving would look like.

If I can master making curves with the grayscaled I think I will order me a CW as soon as possible.

If you look very close at some of the grey strips, you can see that they aren't a solid color, they fade from light to dark (in the wrong direction) so even taking it into a photo program and Blurring it won't help.

If you can get the strips solid, you might be able blur it enough in something to make it a smoother transition between colors.
