Thread: My Keepsake Box for my wife

  1. Default My Keepsake Box for my wife

Hey Guys, I just completed a modified Keepsake Box for my wife. I kept the same basic shape as the original, just replaced all of the patterns with my own.

What do ya think? It's carved in Maple and stained with Red Oak (Minwax) and then finished with like 20 coats of Polycrylic Satin Finish.

That's real nice - did you learn any tricks during the sanding process?

  7. Default Don't get me started on the sanding!

I hated it. I for some reason, I had one area that the machines left a very fuzzy finish. I tried and tried to sand it, just couldn't seem to make any headway. I used mostly the brass brush on a Dremel to remove most of the fuzz, which worked really well. Other than that, it was mostly a lot of hand sanding with 220 grit paper.

Had some issues with the 45 degree miters. The curved sides are not so forgiving. But it looks really good.

Thanks for the compliments guys! Now I need to get a new roller bearing for my Z-truck. Right after I finished that project, I broke the roller bearing screw.

I like it very much! The extra 20 coats really creates depth!!! Well worth the extra time involved!
