There is a ton of stuff about this on this forum, difficult to query sometimes.
It is difficult to give a precise answer, most of the help is with CorelDraw.

If you have Photoshop, try using the blur features. This tends to remove the rough edges. Look at the photo and decide what needs to be high in the carving and low in the carving. Change you photo to a grayscale then change the high areas to a light color and low areas to a dark color.
Thanks for the reply carvespot. Thats just what I was looking for. I do have photoshop. I tried the blur tool. That looks like the ticket, thanks again!
ok I found picture of a yamaha yzf600r. I think im getting closer. Here are my results.

I dont really need a photo of a motorcycle. I'm just trying to figure out how to make my OWN patterns using a picture on the computer.
