DocWheeler, I am so impressed with your work with one arm. I lost the use of my foot after a fall downstairs and am pretty much confined to a scooter. I've often thought how lucky I am to lose a foot and not my hand. This has been so hard on me but after 3 years I'm getting used to it. Pam

    Note to Jeff or Ron.....

Design a tool that mounts to the Z and has a quick acting handle to lift up with one hand to disengage the bit with one hand.... Or better yet.... A automatic bit changer.....

Perhaps one that stores all the bits you'll ever need right in the unit. Ah yes, I see that price skyrocking just a hair....

Already in the works AL... I have an air actuated release designed, like you would have on a large scale automatic tool change CNC machine. Just trying to get ahold of a spindle/ Z truck to start adapting the idea to it.

    Craig,
A little less likely for this to happen. If the bits were stored in the chuck unit, the mass would be far to heavy for this spindle, also it would be incredibly unbalanced. However the Idea of a toolchanger has gone through my mind.... one step at a time however...

    Default Christmas gifts

I didn't want to hijack another thread, but finally completed the four jewelry boxes I carved about four months ago. A whole lot of finish work!

I think that these are the first projects where 400 grit seemed course to me. Probably not the quality that Autobody produces, and definately not as interesting a subject.

There were four boxes (actually five if you count the first "practice" one), two cherry and two walnut. The other walnut one not pictured was sent to Tacoma last week before I had the gilding done.

The boxes are very similar to the mpcs offered by LHR, the differences are the legs, carving on the bottom, and carving on the bottom of the lids.

I'm going to make this two posts.

The insides and "feet" are flocked, and the shorter names did not look good so I put gold leaf on them (not well done, never done that before).

The walnut ones were shellacked with Amber shellac, which was not de-waxed so I had to remove the wax, I then put several coats of lacquer over that. The cherry ones were done as suggested here on the forum with diluted sanding sealer (waterbase) covered with wipe-on-poly.

I hope that they like them, I know that they will not believe the hours that I worked on them.

    Default Jewelry Boxes

    Ken,

Every one's a Winner, very nice,
Plus the text on the bottom is a Great Idea

Believe me I know applying gold leaf can be fun --- but tricky
I normally end up with more of it stuck to me than to my project.

    Ken,

I'm gonna have to stop up there in Michigan sometime amd have you show me some of the tricks-of-the-trade. I do know that I should have gone for the volume discounts from Otto Frei for the radial bristle disks as I probably ended up ordering that many in a couple of grits before I was finished.

    Thanks for the reply.

    Doc,
Now those are nice. That's the kind of project I'm aiming towards. I love the touch w/ the flocking. Very Nice!!

    Happy Holidays,

    Bernie :^)
