Hello Everyone,

I’m relatively new to using the CarveWright system and could use some advice from experienced users here. I’ve recently started exploring woodworking as a hobby and decided to dive into CNC carving, but I’m finding that there’s quite a learning curve when it comes to project setup and selecting the right materials.
I’d like to start with a relatively simple project—a custom nameplate with some decorative edges and a carved logo. My main questions are:

 1. Material Recommendations: What types of wood do you find work best for beginners? I’d like something that carves cleanly and is forgiving if I make small errors. Are there any particular brands or suppliers you’d recommend for quality materials?
 2. Bit Selection: For a project like this, what kind of bits would you recommend? I’ve heard that the type of bit can significantly impact the level of detail and finish, but I’m not sure where to start.
 3. Software Tips: I’ve been using Designer, but I’m still getting familiar with its features. Are there any tips or tricks to ensure smooth design and execution? Also, if you’ve encountered common mistakes during your early projects, I’d love to hear about them so I can avoid them.
 4. Finishing Touches: Once the carving is complete, what’s the best way to sand and finish a project to really make it stand out? Are there specific products that work well for sealing and protecting the wood?

Thanks in advance for sharing your expertise. I’m really excited to learn and grow with this tool, and I’m hoping to create something I can be proud of.
Looking forward to your insights!
