Default Bit won't touch bit plate

The machine was carving normally but at a bit change, the bit moved to over the bit plate and only went down a little, not nearly close to the plate. It makes a couple passes at it then moves to the other side and tries to start carving. The end of the bit is not near the board and the machine is trying to carve way up high. Any ideas why this has started?

Don't know the exact answer but the machine touches the bit plate to establish a height for reference. It uses the amount of downward resistance to indicate it has touched the plate. If something interferes with the downward stroke creating resistance it will obviously mistake it for the plate. Look for the cables in back on the right side for the lid switch to be loose and catching. If not use a light and try to see what may be in the way. Also manually push the head to the right with the power off and then manually lower it and see if you feel something.
    Good luck

I would turn the power off and manually move the truck up and down to see if you can feel any resistance. It would be sawdust built up in the belt or chip of wood lodged there it could also be bad bearings.

I found some dirt on one of the Z truck bearings. Cleaned the bearings and that cured the problem.
