Thread: Carving only part of an oval

Default Carving only part of an oval

I used an oval to get the correct curve for a project. However, the machine during the carve will carve a straight line on the edge and at the end of the board for the part of the oval that isn't on the board. See attached jpg. The red line indicates the carve that happens. It's about a 1/16" in on the board. Any suggestions on how to fix this? I really don't want to do a line with a bunch of points to do the bend. It'll never be a smooth curve.

I've also attached a simple sample project that has the oval.

Do you have the knife tool? it is on the utility toolbar. I am not sure which module that comes with. You can cut off the excess part of the oval and delete it.

Are you using the 7" rule for staying under the rollers? Is your board being supported with extra out feed support?

Thx. i've tried that, but it doesn't seem to work on an oval. It just turns it into a big circle. Feel free to try it on the sample.mpc I posted. Maybe I'm doing something wrong in how to use it properly.

Not sure how staying under the rollers or supporting the board comes into play here. This is a translation issue from design to machine code. As I posted, the machine is carving into the long edge about a 1/16" in where the rest of the oval is off the board. It will carve that line all the way to the end of the board.

If during the measuring process it could loose tracking with the brass roller and cause measuring/position issues. It is highly recommended to always stay under the rollers and use out feed support for long boards.

I suggest that you reformat and relfash the firmware on the memory card. Try your project on a much smaller board as a test run.

Trace over the board portion of your oval with the line segment tool with frequent vertices. Adjust vertices to match the curve precisely. Delete original oval. Make curve a closed figure by tracing along edges of board with line segment tool. Make figure a carve region.

It is weird that it deforms the oval! If you give me the dimensions of your oval, I will create in Corel and cut it there, and post the trimmed piece.

I would use the spline tool to trace over that portion of the oval, then delete the oval. You can get pretty close.

I'm not an expert on the machine but I'm back to original question. Why does the machine carve the unasked for lines? If the plan was to make a carving larger than would fit on one board the lines would make it impossible to cleanly join multiple boards. Haven't tried the carves, just don't understand what is creating the lines. Do we have to clip off any parts of a carve that don't fit the current board to make it a 'clean carve' and then place the removed part on another carve if we need to use multiple boards? Just trying to understand.
    Thx,
    Rick H
