Thread: 1/32" bit on corian

    Default 1/32" bit on corian

I got some Corian (from CW) to do some lithopanes (new grandchild). I did one with a 1/32" bit, it looks great. I tried a second, and when I checked it out 1/3 of the way done, it wasn't carving anything. The tip of the bit had broken off. I stopped that one, restarted with a new 1/32" bit, and the top of that bit broke off as well.
Either Corian is hard on the very thin tip of the 1/32" bit, or I had something else wrong on that second carve. Perhaps I had the Corian in the jig slightly differently. Has anyone else had any problems with that? Or have you all been using it successfully, in which case it's my problem. If anyone has any other ideas, I'll take 'em.

In the end, I restarted that carve a 3rd time with the normal 1/16" bit, and it still looks great. Love those lithopanes.

I've used the 1/32" bit a few times on corian and never had a problem. Did you change the bit setting to 1/32" if not that might be the problem. Also did you use best or optimal settings?
Not sure but normal may be to hard on bit.

Thanks, I'll remember to use best or optimal on settings. I probably didn't do that. Should be doing that for all lithopanes.

Just redid that lithopane with 1/32" bit, optimal setting, as you suggested. Took a lot longer (4 hours optimal, 1:20 at normal), but it looks so much better. I love this stuff. Thanks for the note, Mikewiz.

I usually use best to save on time. Glad it worked for you.
