Hello,
This Happy Squirrel Acorn Dish project was inspired by noticing the squirrels skittering up and down the Oak trees on my property as Spring approaches. The warmer it gets, the more squirrels are coming out! The dish is in the shape of a giant acorn with a squirrel surrounded by Oak leaves on the acorn cap.
The project uses just the 1/16" Carving Bit and the 1/8" Cutting Bit. No other bits are required. Finished dimensions are about : 7" wide x 10" long x 1.5" thick
Main items you will need:
1) The Project Files (included):
• Squirrel_Acorn_Dish.mpc
2) Board with the following dimensions: 0.75" x 9" x 27"
NOTE: Do not use boards that are smaller than specified above unless using an appropriate jig.
3) Sandpaper, glue, stain and/or paint and clear finish
4) Self-stick silicon or cork pads for underside to protect surfaces
5) A Dremel-type rotary tool with assorted abrasive attachments to aid the sanding process. A spindle sander and/or small belt sander can help speed up sanding/surface preparation even more.
Apply the finish of your choice.
Here’s what I used on the sample Happy Squirrel Acorn Dish made from Select Pine:
• Applied one coat thinned Bulls Eye SealCoat (50/50 SealCoat and denatured alcohol)
• Sanded when dry
• One coat full-strength SealCoat to seal
• Sanded lightly when dry
• Applied Rust-Oleum Wheat Stain as a glaze (wiped most of it off to enhance details)
• Several light coats Krylon Clear Acrylic overall
