I have an alpha and a beta machine. Alpha is down with control issues I think. Now Beta is down with y-bearing and other issues. Is there any complications associated with swapping controllers to confirm that is the issue with A?

I have not done it myself but I do not think there is any problem with swapping controllers.
I have done "A" to "A" Swaps twice since 2007. My thoughts are that you could run into size issues if one machine had something other than a factory default calibration. Where a project done on the machine before the swap might be a slightly different size done again after the swap. I don't work in that tight of standards... I think the "B" machines were more of a Physical change rather than a Electronic / Encoder change but I have never seen a "B" Machine. I think the UN Lock code was introduced in the "C" Machine but someone correct me if I am wrong. LHR may chime in on this topic. Wonder if I purchased a new Computer for a "A" Machine would it arrive as a Unlock "C" Version????

I think Al is right, the factory calibration may be a little different. (My B machines had unlock codes.)
Didn't know the unlock started with the "B"... Thanks...
I had to swap computer during the middle of the big board project I did a few years ago cutting slots in the side of a bunch of boards when the sawdust filled computer failed.
Could not see a difference after the swap.

Make sure the cable is 14 pin and not 18 pin. It will fry your electronics!!!

OK...you scared me...
These are the versions of machines:
Beta Machine 2005-2006
A Model 2006
B Model 2007
C Model 2010
CX Model 2014??
I think you are calling your B model a beta, which is not the same thing.

Here are pictures of the 14 and 18 pin boards... If the donor machine is different then I would not swap.
In the picture I call it a 16 pin but it is a 18 pin.
The Designer Software and Machine control is held on the Memory Cards so I am re thinking that it would not matter if you swapped... Just don't mix 14 and 18 pin hardware as in the FFC Cable and the 2 end Circuit Boards... That = SMOKE... Blown Computer...
