I think that the bit optimization tool just changes the step-over for the selected carving bit. Not applicable in all cases but in most.

Thanks, Floyd, Michael, Dick and Steve for the input. I have only done a couple pierced carves and never deep ones, so wasn't able to give Peter the answer he needed. I sure love this forum for quick help a person can receive.
