    I got the pattern rotated, and redid the cutout just fine.

    I assume the 3d tools you are referring tools are part of the 3d add on, which I do not have. Can I still use your project for carving?

    Yes, that is why I made the extrude into a pattern. You cannot edit the pattern but you can carve it. (You would not have been able to carve the extrude.)
