help with friends school logo

I am trying to carve this logo for a friend to donate to a school. It has been a nightmare. the letters need to be engraved. Any help would be appreciated. Attached is the file he gave me.

Here are two different techniques. One I ran through Shadermap and the other I ran through Corel to try and clean the image. I am no expert with either method so hopefully they can be further improved.

Oscar, if you want to make your work "improvable" by others, you should post gray scale .png.

I have been very busy on this logo. I appreciate the help with this but it came down to me learning more about the CW software, buying more software, working with the pattern in a graphic programs. But I finally got a pattern made . I have carved the boards getting ready to glue them up. I will post the finished 28 x 28 logo in a few days.

I have finally finished this logo. They wanted it in red oak finished clear. Attached are the pictures of the logo is 30" x 30" x 1.5". Learned a lot on this project.
