Help with this pic please

See attached. I have been asked to make a cribbage board with this on it. It's a logo for a local college. With the light and dark colors I'm having trouble making a pattern that looks decent (see screen capture). Anyone have suggestions? Not planning to paint it but will if necessary to get a good product. Thanks
