I saved the magnets that come in the ornamental bits case just for this reason those are some strong magnets !
I purchase magnets from K & J Magnets to hold the cover on a peg cavity on the back of my cribbage boards. You can buy magnets in bulk and a huge variety of sizes here: http://www.kjmagnetics.com/categories.asp

This is just a design suggestion. In the example attached, the corner posts are below the surface on the bottom and above the surface on the top. This allows the top to be indexed to the bottom. I rounded all of the corners but magnets can still be used on top of the corner posts. The depth of the top can be decreased by just increasing the depth of the carve region and the posts. The bottom can be altered in the same way.
