Default I need for ya'll to put ya'll thinking caps on

Seem like we may have had this discussion on the forum before and I can't find it anywhere.
I was ask to make some simple signs with simple text, but the problem is, they want to have the surface of the letter
to be untouched and left as the surface of the wood, untouched. Only carve the feather around the text basically .
attached is my attempted on another sign and the text carved off the top of the letter surface, I had to put a sealer to bring it back
somewhat to the color of the surface.
    Any ideas on this.
Now along with this idea, attached is an artist project where he used a grinder and scraped the surface of the wood from around
what looks like a bird, leaving the surface untouched.
I would like to recreate this, I tried outlining a pattern, creating a pattern as a flat surface and applying a custom feather to it.
My question is will the fat surface be carved as it is doing the feather or not? And how can I do just the feather not the surface.
    any thoughts would be great.

This was brought up a few days ago. My solution was to use a shim on the board when it was doing the finding surface step. This would let the machine think the surface was higher than what it really is.

I think Dan had a tip also but do not recall..

I've done something similar to this by making a carve region with a depth of .001 then putting my text or pattern inside that then applying subtractive merge style to an inverted pattern (I make the text I want into a pattern using a different program, saving a screenshot as .jpg then importing the image to my pattern library)

I too thought about the shim but would'nt it just air carve until it reaches the surface or would it start carving the feather as it air carves.
thanks 2A, I will give your idea some thought too.
I think testing time is coming on a small text and pattern.

You might need to adjust the carving depth. Just make sure the pattern/text height is 0.999

How about just deleting the text and carving the outline with a v-bit??

I played around with 0.00 carve regions made from text outlines and could not keep the feathers. The method only seems to work if the text has a carved background.

I think the shim might just be the simplest way to go.
