I've had very little problems with oak, maple, or cherry. Paduk and purple heart are so hard they take super sharp edges. I personally would still leave draft on because of the lettering.

I have done oscar's pattern with the puffing tool maybe this might fit your needs its a different option.. not trying to outdo anyone..
No worries for me. Please outdo me every time. The more quality patterns out there the more people will use it and the more CW will be matured and improved.
Also kudos go to Dan on the pattern.
I believe these patterns are an improvement and will carve better with less chance of chipout because the letters are not so tall. In both mpcs no draft was used. I would add Draft: Large. Take a look at the difference: the walls with Draft: Large are sloped and much less likely to chip out. The letters still have good contrast and stand out.
no draft
Draft: Large
I tried to download the file that I used where I used the puffing tool ... the file is too big so the file that I posted is the same as oscar's.
i do not see a file to download for this and the one below is a MPC file and the carver de=oes not recognise MPC file suggestions on what i need to do please
Sorry for all the confusion. The suggestion was to use bergerud's pattern and to set the pattern at the same height of the oval. You should then add some draft to the pattern to smooth out the bottom edges of the thin areas to minimize tear out. You can set the pattern to a width of 15 in to maximize the size.
If you have the puff tool you can also apply that to increase the angle at the bottom of the pattern element walls to minimize tear out. I do not have that so can't help.
so i did a carve on the oak i had bought. While the carving looks good and fits the fir. I widened it out to max out the board size. But the letters are all not there. I had made the change to draft small and the letters are almost non exis. I guess i need to change them but not sure how. A expensive learning curve for me
