    Default A couple of new family signs

    just finished them yesterday, the material is Alder with a Tung oil on it,
    it gives it such a good finish.

    Nice carve. Have not heard many on here using Alder for carving.

    Alder is common around here, the grain is tight and it takes a good carving, I do a lot of outdoor carvings too.

    I use alder a lot. Like Perry said it carves very well with minimal fuzzies. I use what is considered cabinet grade and get it from a local guy who gets it from a commercial cabinet shop. The pieces are mostly end pieces to small for what they need. He gets it by the pick up load.

    This a lot better quality of wood that you will get at the big box stores.

    Alder is a special order in most wood shops here. Maple or Birch around this area. I work in a wood shop. The only one in this area. I get to play with wood from all around the world. The nice thing is the end cuts.Click image for larger version.
