Default May 2015 Project of the Month - Wooden Salt & Pepper Shakers

    Hello,

This project creates a pair of wooden Salt & Pepper Shakers for your own table or to sell at Craft Shows or give away as gifts. The cylindrical salt and pepper shaker containers are made by gluing together several segmented rings plus a convex top and rounded ring base with a hole for a cork stopper. This is a two-sided carve.

The project uses the 1/16" Carving Bit and the 1/8" Cutting Bit. No other bits are required. The overall dimensions of the finished projects are about: 1.75" Diameter x 3.75" Tall (2.25" base diameter)

    Main items you will need:
    1) The Project Files (included):
    • Salt-Pepper_Shakers.mpc

    2) Board with the following dimensions:
    0.75" x 5.5" x 20.5"

Do not use boards that are smaller than specified above unless using an appropriate jig. Larger boards are fine in all cases.

    3) One 3/32" drill bit, 1" x 1.25" cork stoppers

    4) Sandpaper, drill, glue, stain and/or paint and clear finish

    5) A Dremel-type rotary tool with assorted sanding wheels and bits to sand small details and speed up preparation for finishing.

Apply your choice of finish. Here’s what I used on my Salt and Pepper Shakers made from Select Pine:

    • Rust-Oleum Ultimate Stain - Wheat
    (stained only the pepper shaker)

    • Several coats Krylon clear Acrylic spray
(no finish was applied on the interior)

Great project, Michael. I can see where they will be fun to build and will be some cool gifts. I am going to add and "S" on one of the tops (2 hole probably) and a "P" on the other. That might help avoid some confusion....especially early in the morning after a long night

Just wondering if the registration server is offline because I am unable to connect to it to download this project? Thanks

I would assume you could double the amount of rings and make a taller one?

So that's how you did it. I wasn't sure if you glued 2 hollowed out halves together. Nice work.

Thanks, Jason. I toyed with a few different versions...a couple idea sketches did have two hollowed halves (although neither of those were cylinders).
