Maybe you have a broken tooth on an X gear.
You can test by "feel" if you raise the head enough to use your hands to push on the belts to get them to move.
Other than that, you would need to take things apart.
I don't think you can see enough by taking the bottom off.
To see the gears well you would need to take off the back side and remove the gear cover, the cover has tabs that stick down through the base - tricky.
Once you figure where the two tabs are it is easier.
I can't remember if you need to take out the X belt carriers or not. Just to look at the gears you wouldn't, but to replace them you would I think.

You could do an x drive test. 0 - 5 maybe? (I am at work so it is a guess) You should hear if it is bad.
To remove the gear cover (located on the bit plate side) you might need to break any sealant that has been applied to the edges. Press in on the center and lift up.
