    Default Hand Crank Alternator

Hi Folks: I finally got my gears figured out thanks to bergerud, These are made out of 1/2 " MDF and mesh very nice. Here are some pics. This is going to be a teaching tool for young science students, so they can learn how electricity is made!Click image for larger version.

Hope some of them realise how much effort you put into this learning tool. You've really used your imagination and shop expertise on this one.

I am trying to figure out what your did. Does it make pulsating DC? Do you have magnets in the big wheel that pass by wires?

The center plate has three coils of 150 turns ea. of 22 ga. magnet wire, the two out side magnet rotors have 6 ea of 1/8 X1X1 neo magnets. with each pole facing opposite, north ,south in a zigzag pattern. As the rotors turn this produces alternating current or AC single phase. AC is not good for charging batteries, so it is then run through a bridge rectifier to convert it to Direct current.Click image for larger version.

I remember 5th grade. My teacher had a hand crank and made us all get in a circle holding hands, while it was turned. The electricity went through all of us....I was terrified!!

As a former science teacher I appreciate the value of this project as a teaching tool. The students are fortunate to have you as their teacher. Great project!

I had the same experience. It was all good until someone decided to loose their grip….next person in line gets a pretty good jolt.
