Conference center sold out! where is the next best place to stay?

There are several in the area. Holiday Inn Express on 45 has special rates for us. There is also a nice one at Kemah Boardwalk, but higher priced since it is a resort area. Many more around north side of lake and west towards 45 at NASA rd 1 and Bay Area Blvd. most <10 minutes away.
