    Default Cutting out words

What are some easy techniques to cutting out words? My attempts have not come out very good. What I have tried are typing my text in inkscape and saving as a dxf file and then importing to designer. Then selecting outline and connecting vector lines to attach the letters. My letters tend to be to skinny when I cut them out. I am flipping my cutout to the outside. Anybody that has a better solution, please help. Thanks

I made these by tracing the font in turbo cad, exporting as dxf and importing using dxf import. Doesn't sound a whole lot different than what you are doing. Some fonts just don't look very good so you need to find one with the right proportions given the height you want to carve. These were about 2.5" tall.

I can do it in designer a lot quicker than I can explain it (took about 2 minutes).

Add text with good beefy font.
Add rectangle underneath but overlapping bottom of letters. Give Rectangle a carve region.
Select both text and rectangle. Right click and select outline patterns.*
Delete the patterns as you only want the outline.
    Add cut path.

*I did move the dot for my letter "i" down to touch, gave carve region to all as you can only outline patterns, not simple vector paths.

Similar to what Connie did except placed rectangle behind letters.

I have made dozens of these types of name signs. Download the Catherine sign at the link below. I couldn't find a pic of the Catherine example file so here is a pic of the Louanne file. Created with Designer 3, and the 2D, and 3D add-ons
