    Unhappy Clicking Noise!!

While doing a carving.....I heard a clicking noise and then my machine stops and on the keyboard it reads " Clean Y Rails".
Previously...... I took the back cover off the Y Motor and cleaned it......
Where is this clicking noise located and how can I resolve this problem??
Got a few carvings to complete by Monday!!

    Thanks,
    George,
    SC

The clicking noise is either the Y belt slipping or the Y gears slipping. If the message was clean rails, I think I would go with the Y gears. (Smaller jumps than belt slips.) Check to see how tight the Y belt is and then check to see if the Y motor drive gear is loose. The Y bearings go after 300 hours or so.

Like posted above, the clicking is the servo motor splined shaft turning and the big plastic gear tilted toward the center of the machine under load. The gap opens and the servo motor turns but the gear leaning away clicks letting the Y head get off of home position.

When you open the Y Motor Gear box and remove the big plastic gear you will likely find the shaft worn thin letting the gear tilt toward the center of the machine. The two 685ZZ Bearings have long ago failed and the big gear shaft has been sliding inside the the inner 685ZZ bearing sleeve, metal to metal, grinding down the shaft.

Good News.. The Y Gear and Shaft is a item you can purchase from LHR as seen in that old invoice but at a newer price. Bearing you can find local as they are 5 mm x 11 mm x 5 mm with ZZ or 2 metal shields.

We recommend replacing the 2 685ZZ Bearings when you change your Cut Motor Brushes at 250 Cut Hours.... They last longer but it is cheaper to replace the bearings early then replace the gear.

Just to add I have had the clicking happen during a carve trying to squeeze the last bit of juice out of a carving bit. Never had it happen except when I have had a very dull bit. Just something to watch out for.

That must be a pretty loud clicking to be heard over the noise of the cut motor.. Is the clicking heard also when the machine is homing? Or just on hard pull.

I have gotten a few Text Messages from him today. I did not even notice yesterday it was my Southern Carve Buddy George... I had sent him a Y Gear and Bearings early last year and some stuff for a favor. He changed the Bearings but now needs to change the big gear... He should be back up and carving soon.

I just started getting the clicking. I tried to order the Y gears and LHR said I had to order an entire Y motor assembly because everything was press fit, or some such nonsense. Are there other sources for these gears. I did order the bearings for the y gears from Al's source. I wonder if they are they no longer user changeable as well?

I took off the Y motor assembly and everything looked tight and I did not see any broken teeth, so I assume it is the bearing that have gone ka-put.

    Thanks,

You may not need the bearings or gear. It could be the belt slipping.

If you had the clicking then the big gear was leaning away from the shaft of the servo motor and the clicking at the bit plate is the splines of the motor clicking on the plastic gear.

The check of the gear is to actually measure the diameter of the shaft right up against the plastic gear where I wrote THIN...

If you don't have a device to measure this, use a small Crecent Wrench, or a Adjustable Wrench.. Size on the middle of the shaft for a slip fit then move to the plastic gear and see if you have any slop... or it is thinner....

Yes, you could have caught it before the shaft started grinding away and just the bearings are bad. I have never had the belt slip.

I have the y drive in my hands and some new bearings. I am looking for the best way to take this apart. It appears that everything is press fit together. I do not want to tear up something and make things worse.
