Default Carving a flat region out of a puff?

I have this little project I am messing with, and basically what I am trying to do is create a puffed carve with a cutout for a flat region to inlay a piece of aluminum plate. The problem I am having is that when I create the carved region, the floor of that region is curved as well. It needs to be flat. Any ideas on how to do this? I tried making the plate a pattern without the carved region, then apply the carved area but still get the same result.

Another thing I noticed is that once to do an invert and subtractive option that you can no longer really control the depth of the carved region. Any thoughts on both?

Try setting the clip carving to exclusive on the puffed region. Then where the regions overlap only the flat region will be carved.
