Route button in designer

New guy here, I'm a button pusher and like to just try everything until I figure out what's going on. I've thoroughly enjoyed the learning curve and trying out the different things that are shared on here.

I am using designer 1.187, and have a button that I don't know what it does. The Route button, to the right of the text button, It's a blue shell with red dots along the top. I've watched several tutorials and read what I can find, but haven't found what the button is supposed to do.

Page 64 of the software manual explains what it does. Basically it lets you assign different bits to a line by adding vertices.
