    2 inches sounds interesting, but still the side of the probe.

    If one were willing to risk the money (if this didn't work) and had the machinest/welding/soldering skills. Could you not make a longer needle, cut the present one above the taper and attach a longer one. This probe works off of vibration/feel does it not and I do not belive there is anything inside the needle. The downside I can think of is the sensitivity if it were longer. Just a thought.
