It isn't an exact analogy, but if you want to use MS Word as a comparison.... MPC's would be your document file and PTN's would be "clipart"

An .mpc is the project file, which is a compilation of multiple elements, such as text, lines and patterns. You should always save your project to your hard drive, so that you can go in and make changes to it. Projects uploaded to the memory card, cannot be downloaded back into the software and changed. It is no longer a language that the software understands.
