Thread: where can I buy wood

  1. Default where can I buy wood

Anyone know where I can buy wood in the Fort Knox/LouisvilleKY area? I have a Lows, Home Depot, and an 84 lumber but as you know they don’thave what I need. I have found a place in Louisville but they don’t have largestock. I would looking or ¾”X16”X60”. This is to give you an idea on size Iwill need. I have done a little woodworking before but never had to go out tobuy my own. I would buy my wood through the wood shop/craft center. Fort Knoxdoesn’t have a wood shop at the craft center so I am on my own.
    Thank you
    Bill

    Hi Bill,

It would be pretty rare indeed to find "stock" lumber in a width of 16". Generally, you will need to glue boards edge-to-edge either yourself or have a cabinet shop do it for you, to get a width like that.

I do know our local Lowes store has glue-ups of knotty pine in widths from 12" to 36" (narrow strips of boards glued edge-to-edge). If you have a project that will be painted, or actually want the "look" of knotty pine perhaps those might work for you.

One of the photos below show a small footstool I made from the knotty pine glue-ups I just described. The other photo (of the pedestal table) required the top to be carved/cut from a slab measuring 14"x14". That was achieved by gluing two 1x8 (nominal) boards edge-to-edge and clamped and weighted on a flat surface (my table saw surface) while the glue cured.

I like the knotty pine look but I was hoping I could findsomewhere with a better selection on wood. I have never glued boardsedge-to-edge and don’t know the best technique. That is a good idea though, I will have to work on. Thanks

Another though comes to mind that our common max width run through the CarveWright is 14 1/2 inches so again 16" wide stock would not be usable for carving. I'd suggest an internet search for wood suppliers in your area and see who's in the market besides the big box stores. There have to be some sawmills between you and Lexington. Although in Maryland, I've found myself in a similar predicament looking for a good source of lumber. In the end, I purchased lumber from...

...out of North Carolina. They are very reasonably priced, and have a wide selection of woods.

I live just south of Atlanta and near me is a company that sells on EBay and local. They ship. I am told shipping is reasonable. I like dealing with them and there prices are pretty good. http://www.thewoodyard.com .

Where in MD? I have found a couple of local sawmills here in Maryland.
