    what would cause the center line feature to start deep and go to nothing ?

    A bit slipping in the chuck, dirty z encoder disc, dirty z rails, loose or broken 14 pin cable..

    Mine turned out to be the encoder disk. The dirtier it got the deeper it cut. The disk should be clear with black hash marks around the edge.
