    Default Best wood for carving?

I've had good results with Walnut, and Oak -- both white and red. I tend to use these when I'm going to stain the finished product. I have also used Popular and end up shellacking ot painting it.

My expreince is limited so I wonder what do most of the "senior" members use?

I like cherry, walnut and maple. Most of the hard woods carve good but the open grain woods like red oak can be a little more sanding to make look good. many post on woods have been posted so do a search to get other views.
