The horse head has a pattern and a cut path. Go to VIEW > Carving List to see the different elements. You may want to delete the cut path, if you don't need it.

Here is a link to an article I wrote about getting started with making CNC patterns http://www.cncmodelclub.com/free-cnc...-cnc-patterns/

It wont teach you how to make anything specific but it's a good primer to point you in the right direction. There are some other tutorials there to make specific things. Hope it helps

Bert, very nice work on that pattern you made.
Using Designer 1.187, STL importer, Center line, conforming vectors, scanning probe/PE, and the ROCK chuck.

if I understand you correctly, delete the cutout. Then resize the head to the size you want. then use the outline pattern button and hit the cut path button. that will give you the outline cutout. Or, you could use the pierced function but you would have to make your own tabs for it. Ask bud has great tutorials on the procedure.. just realized there is a second page to this thread so someone might have covered this already...

Ok this is probably just another dumb newbie question. See the attached pattern. How do i isolate just the horse head so it can be outlined and cut out? Do I need other software to do that?
When you import the pattern. You need to click the invert button, and then the down arrow. If you have already imported it, just import it again and do these steps.

What all software do you guys use to create patterns from say photos? Photoshop? Do you really need all the "carvewright" software packages?

I love the carvewright software.... saving money for the 3d package. some people use other modeling software and get great results. being computer challenged when it comes to software such as zbrush, moi, and others, the cw software is awesome. Easy to use, learning curve is shorter and I just love it!!!!
