Some times a segment gets 2 handles and some times only 1 and no control over which end of the segment the handle is on. Is there a rationale for how the program decides what to give me? Is there a way to control this?

I noticed this too, when drawing connected splines. One workaround that helped the other day was for me to copy and paste a segment that I happened to get with two handles, then join them and manipulate them. I ended up with a closed path of multiple splines all with two handles, which was what I needed.
I will try that, but there should be an easier way. It is tight to work in the bottom windows provided with the 3D functions. Anything from the software people?ThanksClint
You may stretch the lower window, and grow the drawing area.

Ive sometimes had success converting to a line and then converting back to spline to get 2 handles
