I just carved another version of the stallions door pattern. I resized it to fit on a 1x8 instead of the 2x10 and I figured out a new technique for quickly making rectangles a little fancier. Just make a circle and place it right on the corner of your rectangle carve region. Make the circle center go right where the corner is and then the horizontal and vertical bars on the circle will line up with the rectangles's edges. Then make the circle a carve region with zero depth. Make the Draft on the circle match the feather on the rectangle. Once you have it sized where you like it then you can just mirror it to the other 4 corners if your rectangle is centered or copy it if it is not. If you mirror it you can resize it later if you need to and all 4 will resize together.
Most people seem to really like the rectangles with the "fancy" corners over plain rectangles. And you can really dress them up in only a few seconds after you have practiced the technique a few times. I hope this helps someone improve their carvings.

Dave... that pattern seems to turn out great no matter what you carve it on. I like your idea of making a fancy rectangle.

The rectangle was actually a "built-in sled". For my use, I cut the rectangle away. Looks great that way too!

Default Wish me luck on this

Thanks for sharing this MPC Badbert,

I decided to convert the whole pattern to fit on a 3/4" board since I did not have any 6/4 stock that long. Even at the reduced depth and sized for a 10" board it shows 14 hours to carve it all at Best qualityl. I've set up a "progress" copy of the project in Designer so I can note the carving progress as it proceeds today.

I have never tried a carving on a board this long so it will be interesting to see if it will track straight enough going through the CW to keep the tracking wheel on the board edge. Again, please wish me luck and photos to follow. Happy New Year All.

And the 14 hour carve continues at 25% of the total length. I get the feeling this may be a long evening.

So far so good. Has anyone carved this at Optimal Quality? How long did it take?

Another thread has me thinking of laminating a piece of 5/8" thick Walnut to a lighter colored poplar or pine board and carving just through the Walnut with this same pattern. Should be striking with the dark horses and rope on the lighter background.

I carved it twice on Optimal! It takes FOREVER!! LOL The contrasting wood Idea sounds fantastic! Please post your results.

    Thanks Gents,

Now I don't feel near as bad about this 14 hour carve. I'll see how this best quality trial run goes and how much clean up sanding I have to do before commiting to the OPTIMAL carve. That one may well be the two wood combination since I want a few eye catching display pieces for the Atlanta WW Show in March.

Coming up on the 50% mark at 3:00 PM.

Awesome, Capt Bruce! I like the idea of two different woods.
