I'm far from the expert but for most of us making a 'quality' carving from a pic is tough. To convert a pic it needs to be converted to 'grayscale' which the carver uses. That can be done in Corel PaintShop or other photo programs. That can be imported to the pattern editor(additional purchase for the carver or comes with the probe) and saved as a pattern. Unfortunately This only gives you a shallow outline, not much depth or 3d height. Works reasonably well for lithos as the minimal difference in thickness shows up when backlited. Not so obvious when carved in wood.
There are forum members who can work the converted photo in other programs and end up with patterns that show the depth. I expect some of them will post here and give you some direction as to what you will need and the complexity of the software used. From there you will have to decide whether the cost along with your comfort range in computers makes it viable.
