Thread: Here is my First Project

  1. Default Here is my First Project

After making the dbFletcher Dust Collector attachment when I first got my machine last year I began to put together the design for this picture frame:

Its a Victorian or Rococo style frame with leafy organic flowing shapes. The design is my own but the idea came from another plastic frame that I purchased on ebay. This frame is made for a 16" x 20" canvas. I dont have a canvas that would fit this kind of frame. I tryed a painting that I had done a while back but it didn't look right. This kind of frame needs to have an old stuffy, dark and dreary portrait in it. Or maybe a lanscape with dark green and umber colors. I want to make, and feature this frame on ebay once I start up my own business.

This frame is made of white oak. I used a gunstock, natural mix for finish. Next time I want to try gel stain to get a more antique look with darker colors in the cracks. I used the little dremmel sanding wheels with a flex shaft to sand the detail. You can't really see it but the leafy parts have a very wavy contour. Each side is carved, and there are two layers glued together so it is actually pretty thick and heavy. I learned a lot putting the design together in the computer but I have learned much since then. I plan on making a whole series of these Victorian style frames.

Looks good, I wish my stuff looked that good when I sand them.
I still fighting with the sanding on my projects.

Sanding or lack thereof, may depend upon several things. Some of which are listed here.
    1) Your selection of carve quality as you load the MPC (project) to the card. Optimal, requires almost none on most of my carving.
    2) Sharpness of the bit(s).
    3) choice of board, and it's moisture content.

Excellent job and a fine looking frame. I'm looking forward to seeing a pic when it has art in it.

Actually just a minor correction. The dust collector was created by user "fletcher". And he did a fine job on it.
