Default Memory Box Lithopane Lid 1

I was asked by a friend whose father passed away to make a "memory box" for his sister. We talked about various ideas and I sat looking at a box of LED's...instead of a puck light...hmmm...
First I glued up a lid from the wood (cherry) he provided, and I used the CarveWright to cut a square recess on the back of the lid to hold the lithopane.
Then I used the CarveWright to carve the beveled circle on the front. This is the viewing port for the lithopane.

Next I carved the text from a portion of a poem he asked to include. A portion is on the lid, and the remainder will be inside the box.

Now it was time to carve the lithopane. I used a photo of his father and sister...and converted it to gray scale (grey for you wacky brits) and carved it into 1/4" corian. Most of us know how to make a lithopane by now, yup?

Here's how the lithopane sits in the rear of the lid. Next I prepared some 1/4" material that performs a couple functions. First, it gives me a registration for when the lid closes into the rest of the box. Secondly, it is where I'll attach the LED. You can see I've cut a slot in it to run the cord through to the rear of the box.

    Part 2:

We check to make sure the light is working...

Now it's time to finish the box, stain it..and then put the lithopane and light back in.
The LED lights are strip lighting used in the sign industry. The strip can be twisted, curved, etc.

I really like the way the lighting forms a sort of "halo" effect.

Where do you find the lighting, Doug?

Doug i love this project! In case you didn't know or was un aware they do make led in a "super slim" version from www.superbrightleds.com i believe the measurements are .2 inches wide wide . I have used these lights many times and they are designed so that the lighting only projects 90 degrees as opposed to 180 degrees so no light lost on the back side. I know your friend will love that litho. It is absolutely beautiful and the memory box is in good hands.

Great job! if you don't mind me asking a couple of questions.
Where did you get the lights and power supply is it expensive
Also using leds is there a max and min amount of lights you can or can't use?
Again great job can't wait to see the finished project.

Thanks everyone! Here is the completed box: The lighting questions are tough to answer..as it was a sample dropped off by a fellow sign guy. I'll look into it.
