    Good morning Ken,

On similar projects I found that drilling a 1/4" deep by 1" dia hole with a forstner bit and then a 1/4" drain below that works well. In the 1" dia hole I insert a piece of the green Scotch Brite non woven material. With its porus body it lets the moisture drain without getting clogged everywhere so water gets out. It also seems to dry out well when its not raining/snowing keeping the seed from molding. Hope that might help.

    Very Nice/Quick Reply

"Sounds Good" -- I have the 1" forster bit and the Scotch Brite pads in several flavors including Green lol,
I'll give it a try today, on a couple of our feeders -- it's supposed to rain/snow tonight.

    Thanks for the idea

I don't normally paint my carvings but the eyes seemed to me like they needed some enhancement, I also carved and painted the bird.

I clearcoated the entire carving with satin Defthane, I added a fair amount of automotive flex additive to the clearcoat. I'm hoping that will allow the clear to move with the wood and prevent cracking and peeling. I haven't done that many outdoor carvings but I've never clearcoated one before so I guess I'll eventually see how this works out.

Took the advice from post and used scotch brite pads for the drainage in the seed holders (antlers)

What do you think of it?

    Thanks ~Mike

Thanks Sharon, it's 36" to the top of the birds head, 32 to the tallest antler, the base is 10" tall so the moose wound up 22" tall. Not as large as I had wanted (I originally wanted the moose itself to be 36" tall without the base part) but I'd have needed a larger diameter log section and a longer bar on my chainsaw.

    Thank you. ~Mike
