Never Done A Litho - Questions

I would like to do a litho of my Daughter. How is the carving pattern done in the photo's such as kids and things on these. Are they just digital pics uploaded as pattern files or do they require some work in the editor etc to make the carve worthy.

I have been reading and understand the materials I think I need just wasn't sure on the patterns.
