Thread: Jewelry Boxes

  1. Default

Thanks everyone for the help and comments. It seems that there are still a few bugs in this new BBS system. I am puzzled why the restrictions on the attachment size is so small. Disk space is almost free nowadays and so I don't see it as a huge resource problem. I got my jewelry box album up but now I have the same issue with the kitchen cabinet album. SIGH! The funny thing is that those images were uploaded once before but now they seem to have gone into pixel heaven. Maybe in the future I will just create my own web album and post the link.

    Frederick,

Those boxes are fantastic! And of course the Mrs. is lovely as well.

Did you do those boxes all on the CarveWright, or just the carvings? I would sure love to attempt one like it.

    Thanks,
    Craig

Craig, I started by creating a glue-up with the purple heart framed by oak and then planed it smooth to feed through the CW machine. I made sure I left 3.5" on either end so I didn't have to use a sled. I then just trimmed off the excess to the final size. The taper on the lid was done on the table saw using a jig that held the piece vertical. I don't believe in using the CW machine to do things that traditional tools can do faster and better. The inside trays were made by ripping 1x3 oak stock to create two 3/8x3 strips and then planed them to 1/4" to ensure consistency and smoothness. The red flocking was bought at Lee Valley Tools. Nice result but really, the coverage is about a third that they claim and for sure you want to practice on a piece before you try it on your box.

    Thanks for the comments!

Excellent! Two more questions if you don't mind...

I can't really tell from your pictures but are those mitered and glued corners for the joinery? If so, did you reinforce them with splines or biscuits for such a large box?

Also how did you do the bottom? Is that just trim or is the main body sitting recessed in a solid bottom piece?

I guess I will throw a third question in while I am putting you through the inquisition here...do you have any information you could share on the jig you used for the tapers on the lid? I've never fed stock through the table saw vertically before (standing on end).

Thanks in advance for your time,
    Craig

    Craig,
Excellent questions! First, you will notice that the corner oak pieces are vertical. That means that when they are mitered, you will not be gluing edge grain but instead they will be glued up essentially the same as if you are doing an edge board glue-up. With the grain of the wood running parallel to each other, the glue joint is actually stronger than the wood and so no splines, buiscuits or other reinforcement is necessary. I use Tightbond III glue for the joints. The bottom of the box is 1/4" plywood set into a dado 1/4" from the bottom of the sides. Because the corners are mitered, the dado is completely hidden.

As for the table saw jig, I will try to take a shot of the jig I made so you can see how it works. If you angle the cut into the blade, you can also get a curved taper, but for these boxes, I just used a straight cut.

    Hope that helps!

Thank you, for showing me how to do that, but can you show me the right
way to add a signature, I have tried several times with no luck.

    Thanks

  10. Default Uploading images

OK, so I found that if you set the JPEG to "progressive" scan, it seems to upload. I think the system reads the first scan as a lower res and allows the pic to load.
