very nice. I have had the instrument goal in mind since I bought the machine 8 months ago, but life happens (I had a 6 month old when I bought it and we have since added another bun to the oven and moved to a new house [ie-new workshop that needs A LOT of work])
corner with what looks like a grid. do you use the grid and estimate or trace over top of the pic?
Tim,
yes, it's best to use some reference photos if you can, layout your mesh first and fit it over the photo, also I use a mandolin to pull the measurements.
I add around .185" extra to the y dimensions in Designer for a finished 10" wide.
regarding the grid I do not use that much and try to tune it out. but I like to use the measure tool once i have a ballpark shape in the works.
Lyle,
I am using Lightwave's modeler but any 3D program that will let you model solids surfaces will work.

Tim,
here is a better photo of the background image.
To get the object scale i use LW measure tool on the model measuring x,y z until I get the correct size. then i scale the backdrop image to it .
once saved into Designer STL. I adjust the programs world scale to match LW about 40% bigger as a rule.
Note: Camera lens can have a lot of distortion and it difficult to get a image with out distortion. Use a long angle lens if you have it.

Images of the neck in 3D..
I loaded the neck object from LW into the STL program then scaled the object to size.
Then I turn the neck to the side
cut the neck in the center
