    Default Project Mandolin

    Can it be done?

I am starting a new build and I thought i post a few pictures as I go..

I start off making my mandolin model as a flat shape, notice the quads wrap around the model horns.

next I use a simple option called extrude to make it 3D.

now to check the fit and design..

Solid surfaces and subdivide. This gets the model ready to export. you will notice the model looks dense this is due to the fact that STL will not shade so the polys need to be high and organically tessellated, once saved i go back to the quad model to work.

    Default Into Designer

Now that I am saved I load my model into Designer STL to scale it.. If you are using Lightwave, just copy the thickness into the STL program for example I set the z size to .75" and that it.

    The mandolin top loaded.

Here in Designer I will add drill outs, recess for the volume controls and dovetail neck pockets, seems quicker to let Designer do it.

    Fascinating LG,

I hope you'll continue the process right through the carving to let us share the creation. Many thanks

Very nice LG... I knew it was only a matter of time for someone to do a mandolin. I look forward to seeing more steps along the way!

    Happy Carving,

Just BEAUTIFUL as I expected. I have used violin varnish on a few things and is a great finishing step. Thanks so much for sharing!
