Thread: Newbie help please.

    Default Newbie help please.

My grandfather just recently passed away from brain cancer. He was building these really cool wagons for family members. Problem is that the wheels all fall apart. My thoughts were that I would just design a one piece whell with the CW. Aparently that is harder than I thought. Anyone have a plan for an eight or nine inch diameter wagon wheel? Nothing fancy, maybe one inch thick. Anything would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

First, what bits do you have (other than the two that came with the machine)?

    Default Wheel

    OK,
Ive made a basic Wagon Wheel, in the style of the Flyer Wagon.
I used a drill size of 1/2 inch for my axle.
I used the 1/2" Classical bit for the profile(s), and the 1/8" cutting bit to cut them out.

The design board is 20" long and 10.25 wide, 3/4" thick.
Add 7 or more inches of length to your actual board, and select "Center on board".
If you glue 2 wheels together, turning the grain 90 degrees, it will make a much stronger wheel, and your new thickness of these glued pieces will look more like the real thing.

The Left wheel is the master and the Right is a "Mirror". so, any changes only need to be done on the Left side.

Thanks a million. I guess I should have been more specific. I meant a spoked wagon wheel. But after I left this site I did actually come up with something. Nothing like what yours would look like but it will work. THank you so much. I love this forum.

As in my earlier post, I would glue two of these together, turning the grain 90 degrees, to give the wheel the strength to be rolled around very much (if at all).

Sorry to butt in Mr. bud..

Good point about making the wheel with rotating grain direction. I would assume some would never think of that. I have made some wheels of quartern sawn wood that will break for that 'tough at play' child. I was one of those children. My mom tells me I could break anything without even trying..
My mom is now about 93 years old... And we had 'good wood' back when I was a young 'wipper snapper'.. As grandfather called me...

For 'fancy' wheels I use a inner core of exterior grade plywood (1/2 inch) and laminate the 'fancy' wood to the outside or outside/inside depending on how 'fancy' I want it to look.... Only have made about 8 sets of wheels but the plywood 'innards' ones work very well! The plywood innards only need to be a disk.
