Thread: Shopstair/railing with carving

    Default Shopstair/railing with carving

I just finished the stairway/railing in my shop. (Other than the newel post caps)

This stairway leads to a bonus room that one day may be a winery tasting room. The other half of the shop, (other side of the double doors is a wine making area. Anyway i incorporated a grape theme to tie everything together on the staircase landing.

The carving is 9" tall by 68" long, done of 5/8" select pine. It carved in a little over 14 hours. Due to the length i had to get some external roller supports other wise the brass wheel lost traction as the board moved need the ends. (using tape helped, as i could see where the wheel stopped touching due the the missing tread pattern explaining why the board kept measuring short)

This is a VA3D pattern from the store that i repeated 3 times with some minor merging to make them flow. A really good, detailed pattern! But i wont be posting as it is licensed.

Here it is in the store:

    here are some pics

    Thanks

Nice job man....and such a shop to boot. Must be nice...I'm jealous. You going to paint or stain it with colors, like purple on the grapes?

Awesome Jesse But I think I'm jealous too because your shop looks bigger than my house.

I should have posted it originally,

but i actually finished it already with 4 coats of helmsman spar urethane, clear semi gloss.

Being stairs, especially in a shop, i figured they would take beating, so i wanted something that was tough, yet could easily have another coat applied if damaged occurred. Also i like things to be bright in the shop, so the natural finish of the pine works out nicely.

As far as shop size, it is bigger than my house too! About 2600 sqft This side of the building is 34x36 with a 17' ceiling. the other size and the bonus room is 20x36, and no cars are parked inside!

It has been a lot of work, but i am enjoying the space!

    Jesse -

One design flaw - never put the wine tasting room at the TOP of the stairs

Great job on the staircase - first rate.

    Very nice touch!
Back when I was a boy, we carved our own IC's out of wood.
Before they invented drawing boards, what did they go back to?
