I finally made something I can sort of show off. Any constructive suggestions are more than welcome.

I was wondering what you used to make the carving darker than the rest of the piece?

I actually let it carve first. Then after sanding, and I sanded the rose with sponge type sand, I applied a quote of shellac. Then I stained the rose and the letters with a artist brush carefully. But since I had shellac on, any stain over the edges didn't stay as long as I wiped it out right away. After letting the rose sit for about 5-minutes I made a tight ball of clean cloth and rubbed of some of it. After stain dried over night, I sprayed two quotes of lacquer from a can.
