I use basswood rounds from michaels and hobby lobby all the time. They carve great but you have to watch if staining, they splotch and soak up stain quickly.

Regular light bulbs do get very hot in the enclosure. As do Halogen puck lights. I use 20 count christmas string lights, $1.99 at hobby lobby. LED's are the best but I think still too expensive.
