Ben,

Here ya go:

Amen brother! When I bought my machine it was advertised as coming with centerline. Maybe CW could at least discount it for those of us in that same boat.
Robbie,
If we all refuse to buy it they may have to lower the price. I propose that we keep swapping files with the old demo version and see what happens. I have had an excellent Carvewright...
Sarge,
$500 was supposed to be the price for the upgraded Designer with import functionality. Based on the current inflation rate I'd guess it will actually be more like $1100 ;)
Nirmala,
That's great news. I hope that at $100 you haven't priced it so high that no one will buy it. It's a tough call for me. Any chance of getting a demo version to see how it carves? There...
In the woodworking field I think "plunge cutting" is the more used description. I have used a Freud 3/8" straight bit of the same parameters as the Carvewright version with success. The only drawback...
To add to what Dan said, you can choose the 1/8" cutting bit to carve the region and get straight sides. If you use good supports for both ends the length shouldn't be an issue. The only problem I...
Wow Jeff!! That's awesome! Email on the way. I am really thankful for your work on this and look forward to a complete package. And now Paul has even more reason for advocating the posting of PTNs...
No slow downs for me either and I'm pretty sure I used the same version that you found (.029). Maybe you have some corrupt font files causing it?
I agree. The taper could be done with a simple grayscale gradient for a pattern but it would either have to be machined on a sled or made from a wider board so the rollers can ride the edges. See...
IIRC, the machine drills in 1/8" steps and backs out each time to clear the chips. So fooling it with a smaller bit should work fine if you can find a way of chucking it.
Robin,
That work can be done in Photoshop but it ain't easy to get it right. I recommend that you check out some of Jon Jantz' tutorial videos for making the gray scale images in CorelDraw.
Julie,
Is that "nearly nice all of the time" or "nice nearly all of the time"?
You shouldn't have to. I have loaded older and newer versions back and forth and they all worked fine.
Scott,
Are you sure that Designer will import a prn file? These are raw printer data files.
Scott's methods will work to get artwork into Designer but you get a rastered image. There is no way that I know of to directly get vectored lines into Designer except via the font creation method....
The only way that has surfaced so far is to export the paths to a program like CorelDraw and make the lines into a font. Then use the font to place the lines into Designer, Outline and Scale...
I work for Freud and have used some Freud bits in my machine (3/8" straight, V-groove, round nose). We have comparables for most of the Carvewright bits so let me know which one you are considering...
Cycollins,
Excellent observations. Thanks for sharing this info. I used the jaws of a Workmate to spread the force across the whole length of the rollers and it worked well for me.
It's been a while since I did it but if I recall correctly you watch for the screen to display the "Finding Surface" message then press STOP. Then you can use the arrows to jog to the position you...
Can you do it in two carvings? How about one to carve the region and another that fools the machine by setting the board thickness to equal the thickness at the carved area, then jog the machine to...
Greg,
If you can email the file to me I will look at it to see why it has too many points. My guess is that it was created in a CAD program so all of the curves will have about a zillion points. A...
John,
There was a link posted a few weeks ago to the old demo version of the software that does have the centerline feature. Basically the way it works is to follow the center of the character...
Julie,
Do you use mice for bait?
