you can do a google search for "forestry forum" they have a link where you can find someone in your area that has a small mill that you can get wood from.
i had that problem too and seen these hammers at one of the tool sales for $1.00 each...came form china..now how can they make these and ship them for a buck a piece???? well went to pry a nail out...
the slippage is usualy not the belts its the board not turning the brass roller on the keyboard side. boards must be planed dead flat and sometimes need 3m tape added to the underside on the keyboard...
i would always stick with 300 to 400 dpi if possible. some graphics programs with let your resize the dpi and fix some low res jpgs.

i never vacuum and dont have any problems.
if its not the same on both ends you can save it as a greyscale png and bring that into any graphics software and move the half down some then bring back into pattern editor.
if you dont have the probe to be able to scan it or a flat bed scanner to scan it to a picture then take a picture with a cameras then import it into designer and draw vector lines on top of it then...
it will do it so minutley spread out over the entire length of travel that you wont be able to see it like you would if it did it in only one spot. especially if it was a heavy sled.
what happened was after you set the corners and started the scan the sled slipped a little here and there on the brass roller so it thought it was at the end of the scan. rescan the part it didnt get...
